Session 9 (2001)

SESSION 9 is a smart, slow burn psychological horror film, one that gets better and richer in detail every time you see it.

It's drenched with real atmosphere because it's set in a notoriously creepy place, an abandoned insane asylum in New England. It has a really unnerving score and documentary, verite-style cinematography.

I think there's an ambiguity to the story that leaves it wide open to interpretation. It features what is ostensibly the most sinister reel to reel player since Ash accidentally summoned the Evil Dead. And I think you have to pay attention to it, with its intersecting, overlapping timelines, and all of the foreshadowing. I also don't think that it features a single jump scare.
